Wide Bay International Air show 2007

Report – Martin Hone
The much-anticipated Wide Bay International Air show, held at Bundaberg in Queensland over the weekend of 3-5 August proved a great success, with excellent weather and a comprehensive flying programme attracting a bumper crowd.
Friday’s Trade Day saw a large number of exhibitors showing a wide range of wares, while colleges and the Defence Recruitment discussed careers with the many school kids in attendance. In addition there were a variety of market stalls, children’s rides and food outlets, classic cars and bikes, plus a bevy of local aircraft manufacturers such as the Whitney Boomerang GA trainer, the Conroy Sparrow ultralight, the Jabiru range of ultralight and GA aircraft, Aero chute powered parachutes, and the Mike Sullivan 90% scale Spitfires, in which well know entrepreneur Dick Smith seemed very interested.
The air show programme featured Pip Borrman in his Edge 540, veteran Chris Sperou in his Pitts, Paul Andronicau in his Extra 300 and local Ian Bent in his Pitts Special. The day kicked off with an impressive flag drop by parachutists, followed by Chris Sperou’s famous inverted ribbon cut.
Then it was an aerial display by a MIG 15 jet, a formation fly-past of the Russian Roolettes in their Yaks and Nanchang iron curtain trainers, a Learjet, the ever popular CAC Mustang and Wirraway aerobatic routines, a RAAF Hawk jet trainer handling display, plus fly-pasts of the venerable DC-3, and a Jabiru formation. A vintage formation of Tiger Moths, Chipmunks, a Genairco and DH Dragon reminded of yesteryear, before the RAAF Roulettes performed their usual polished routine in the PC-9s.
Then followed a flypast of the only Cessna Citation Mustang VLJ in Australia, a demo of the very capable GippsAero Airvan, simulated combat between a pair of Strikemaster jets, an impressive low level handling display of the RAAF Caribou, A Vietnam tribute sequence featuring ground and air action, plus more RAAF action with the Hunter and a formation consisting of the Mustang, T-28 Trojan, Wirraway, Harvard, Winjeel, a Zero replica and a rare Grumman Avenger. The well-paced and extensive programme was enough to keep the large crowd enthralled right into Saturday evening, and again on Sunday.
