Move more, eat well says 1Seven program (15 August)

Australian Netballer Sharelle McMahon and Australian Cricketer Karen Rolton have been announced as ambassadors for the Medibank Private 1Seven program, a new nationwide health and wellbeing program targeted at tackling the child obesity epidemic.

The two sportswomen, along with cricketer Mike Hussey and footballer Robert Harvey, will be visiting schools as ambassadors for the program.

An initiative of Medibank Private, the program joins forces with Netball Australia, Cricket Australia and the Australian Football League with its implementation supported by health and wellbeing organisation fitness2live.

The primary goal of the 1Seven program is for Australian children to engage in at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise every day and eat seven serves of fruit and vegetables (two fruit and five vegetables). The message is simple: ‘Move More, Eat Well’.

1Seven will promote health oriented classroom activities and practical physical activities to develop key movement and motor skills. It will be introduced to schools over the course of 2006 and beyond, with web-based resources made available to parents, teachers and students through the website www.1seven.com.au.

According to a recent survey, 26.1% of boys and 23.7% of girls in Australia are overweight or obese, leading to problems such as poor body image and low self-esteem, as well as associated health problems, including type 2 Diabetes.

Jon Bisset, acting CEO for Netball Australia Acting said that Netball Australia was proud of its involvement in the program, stating that “children are our future and we need to arm them with the tools to be given every opportunity to succeed in life.”

Netball Australia runs the Fun Net and Netta Netball programs, which are targeted at the 5-10 age group and will be promoted in conjunction with the 1Seven program.

As well as their duties as ambassadors for the program, Netballer Sharelle McMahon and Cricketer Karen Rolton both juggle sporting commitments as well as full time work. Their active lifestyles show them to be ideal role models for children, Rolton stating that she’s “really proud to be a 1Seven ambassador and helping kids learn and understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
