Profile: Cathryn Fitzpatrick

The world’s fastest female bowler

Cathryn FitzpatrickMajor Teams: Australia, Victoria Spirit, Dandenong
Fitzpatrick made her test debut against the touring Indians at the tender age of 22. Unfazed by the big time, Fitzpatrick’s match figures of 2/60 off 53 overs, suggested the young quick was preparing for a long stay in the Australian side.
Now 15 years on, Fitzpatrick has developed into the most feared bowler of her generation.
Despite having to wait until after her 25th birthday to play her first one day international, Fitzpatrick has taken a record 160 one day wickets at an incredible average of just 15.89
The Melbourne born and based bowler has been clocked at almost 120 km/h, making her the fastest female bowler in the world.
However, it is both her economy and strike rates that make her even more terrifying to opposition teams.
In one day internationals, Fitzpatrick has a strike rate of just 33.14, meaning she takes a wicket every five and a half overs. Her economy rate of 2.88 runs per over is second to none.
Fitzpatrick has also taken 55 wickets at only 19.76 in her limited opportunities at test level.
The Victorian quick played in both the 1997 and 2005 world cup wins and was instrumental in both victories.
Off the field, Fitzpatrick works as a post woman for Australia Post.
The 37-year-old has no immediate plans to retire and says she will continue to play as long as she enjoys it.
And what does she plan to do when she retires?
According to her personal profile on the Victoria Spirit website, he ambition is to “replace Richie Benaud in the Channel 9 commentary team”.
In the meantime she will be trying to defend the state championship she won last year with the Spirit.
