(13 August, 2008) Greta Parry has written a wonderful piece recently, on the women who build grass-roots AFL clubs. See this link. Meanwhile, I could use some help with turning this site into a better-resouced publication and you are welcome to contact me via this email link. AWS has a lot of potential. GA
(13 Sept, 2006) Maybe things are finally moving in the right direction --- that's the impression you get reading the report from the recent Senate inquiry into women's sport and recreation. At least now there's something on the public record about the near-criminal state of affairs. See our report on the news page from 9 September. GA
(9 Nov, 2005) Welcome to All Women Sport.
The idea of running a sport mag concentrating on women is anything but new --- however it seems to be a bit too much of a challenge for publishers.
The reasoning against taking on such a title has generally run along these lines:
1. Women's sport is under-resourced and so there's no money in covering it;
2. Sports fans want to read about the biggest, fastest and strongest, which is -- in most cases -- men;
3. Big participation rates do not equal a substantial audience.
There are elements of truth to all of that, but we can't help thinking that the time for a title along these lines has well and truly come.
Certainly the relatively low cost of publishing on the web makes it possible, and the fact this is largely being staffed by volunteer students in the Media Studies and Journalism programs at La Trobe University makes it viable.
But will it eventually become a self-supporting commercial property? We hope so -- only time will tell…
