Henin-Hardenne cruises into Open (May 31)
French OpenDefending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne began her campaign for a third Roland Garros title with a sterling 6-3 6-0 first round victory over Estonia's Maret Ani.
Playing a forceful contest that featured both her standout all around offense and remarkable defense, Henin overcame a spirited effort from the inexperienced Ani in the first set and wiped the court with her in the second set.
While Ani tried to press the action with her big forehand, Henin showed much more variety than her foe and dominated her from the backhand side. The Belgian nailed 17 winners to six from her opponent and committed five fewer unforced errors, despite the fact that it was a cold and windy day in Paris. She also knocked in 71 per cent of her first serves. "It was tough for all player the today," she said. "It was pretty freezing and windy. It's not easy for first match. But it's the best match I've ever served. I was very happy because it's always tough to play the first round, you have to stay focused and be careful. I tried to be a little aggressive. I've been very focused in preparation and I just have to go play my game."

Two-time French Open semifinalist and No3 seed Nadia Petrova became the first major casualty of the women's tournament on Tuesday, shockingly defeated by Japan's Akiko Morigami 6-2 6-2.
After winning three clay court crowns (Amelia Island, Charleston and Berlin) coming into the event, including overcoming Justine Henin-Hardenne in Berlin, Petrova was expected to make a major push for her first Grand Slam title, but a left leg injury and a quick, zoning foe did her in. Petrova injured a muscle in her left leg in practice and said she couldn't get a good push off it. She limped around the court, called upon the doctor and even stopped sitting down at the changeovers between games. The 69-ranked Japanese veteran strung her around the court and showed very quick hands. Petrova, who reached the 2005 semifinals, was devastated. "It's a new injury I've never experienced," she said. "I couldn't move and felt slow and it was affecting me in the head. Morigami played her best, but there is no excuse for me not winning the match.
"I'm disappointed because I was really looking forward to this. I've had really good results here. It was really unfortunate what happened to me. It was bad luck." Source: French Open

Scholz retires from International netball (May 21)
Netball AustraliaAustralian representative and Medibank Adelaide Thunderbirds veteran, Peta Scholz has announced her retirement from international netball.
The 29-year-old wing defence made her international debut against New Zealand in 1999 and has since gained 54 Australian test caps to establish herself as one of Australia’s most prominent and talented netballers.
Scholz was a team member of many successful campaigns for Australia during her career including winning the World Youth Cup in 1996, the World Netball Championships in 1999 and the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal at the 2002 Manchester Games.
Scholz has been known to rise to the challenge and enjoy the epic battles many international tests produce and she was rarely ever beaten on court.
“I really enjoyed being part of the Australian Team,” said Scholz. “I enjoyed the bond we shared and the lifelong friends I made. I loved getting an opportunity to see different parts of the world that I would not have seen had I not played netball. I also loved the feeling of winning and the competitive spirit within the team.”
Scholz previously withdrew from the Australian Open Squad in October 2004 when pregnant with her first child Matilda, who was born in May 2005.
“The commitment required to play in the Australian Team is just so huge and as I now have a family, work part time and play for the Thunderbirds, it’s difficult to fit everything in,” said Scholz. “I also don`t want to miss out on watching Matilda grow up.”

In a battle of the top two teams, the Medibank Adelaide Thunderbirds reigned supreme last Friday against the Melbourne First National Phoenix at ETSA Park, 61-56.Both teams started the game evenly with a fast paced game seeing both teams score a swag of goals in the opening quarter.

Missed opportunities by the Thunderbirds, both in the goal circle and down the court, opened the door for the reigning premiers, who took control of the game and the scoreboard in the third quarter, 46-43. In a nail biting last quarter, it was a constant seesaw for the lead between the two powerhouse teams.
The Thunderbirds outscored the visitors in the final quarter, which led them to win the match and cemented their place on top of the Commonwealth Bank Trophy ladder.

Orioles grab 2nd netball round (May 15)
Orioles websiteIn a thrilling display of fast and disciplined teamwork, a confident Perth Orioles ran out convincing and deserving winners over Allied Pickford Melbourne Kestrels at Challenge Stadium last night with a final score of 59 to 53.
Perth Orioles raced away to an early lead in the first quarter, with dynamic teamwork and lightning passes into their attacking zone. Melbourne Kestrels appeared shell shocked by their opponents attacking play and had no answer to the Orioles run on goal. With the massive height advantage of Orioles’ shooters Caitlin Bassett and Kate Beveridge, and pin point feeding by Stacey Rosman and Jessica Shynn, Kestrels struggled to stay in touch until several wild Orioles’ passes into attack and missed opportunities in goal allowed Kestrels to settle and steady teamwork in goal by Bianca Franklin and Caitlin Thwaites saw the Kestrels level the scores for a score-line of 16 each at quarter time.
The second quarter was a much more evenly contested match, with neither team appearing to take the advantage. Although Kestrels took a narrow one goal lead into the long break, it was not a convincing lead. Kestrels 31 led Orioles 30.
The third quarter brought several changes from the Kestrels’ bench, with Andrea Booth taking the court at GA in an attempt to gain greater mobility in the Kestrel attacking zone. Perth Orioles however regained their earlier dominance and with their defenders, Beckett and Willcox repelling numerous Kestrels forays into attack, and lightning passes into the Orioles shooters, the home team thrilled their fans by taking a seven goal lead into the third quarter. Scores at three quarter time, Perth Orioles 49 leading Kestrels 42.
Despite numerous desperate changes by the Kestrels in the final quarter, Orioles held fast and to a screaming crowd held their lead to take the second successive win for the 2006 netball season. Final scores Perth Orioles 59 goals winners over the Kestrels’ 53 goals.

Webb wins in Virginia (May 15)
LGPA websiteKarrie Webb is back to her old form, the one that earned her a spot in the LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Fame, but seemed to elude her for much of the last three years. This week, she thumped the field, building a five-shot, final-round lead in the Michelob Ultra Open and left everyone else playing for second place; and now she is savoring victory and her place at the forefront of women's golf more than ever.
"I think I was so spoiled there for a while that I finished seventh or eighth and that would be a poor tournament for me," said Webb, who won 28 tournaments from 1996-2002, but was winless last year and won only once in 2003 and 2004. "I would be mad that I did not win or whatever, and I don't want to have that mentality again.
"But for a while there, it was really hard for me to finish in the top 10. I couldn't believe how hard it was to even post a top 10, so I am not going to take those for granted, either."
For the first three events of the year, Webb was not even carding top-10 finishes, as her best finish was a tie for 24th at the Safeway International Presented by Coca-Cola. It looked like another laborious year was ahead for the former No. 1 player in the world, but then came the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the old Karrie Webb-the one that was a two-time Rolex Player of the Year, three-time Vare Trophy winner and 30-time LPGA champion-showed up.
Webb beat Ochoa in a playoff to win the Kraft Nabisco Championship, but before she hoisted her seventh career major championship trophy, she struck one of the most memorable shots in major championship history, holing her pitching wedge for eagle on the 72nd hole from 116 yards.
Since that one shot, a confident Webb has added another win, two runner-up finishes and a tie for 10th to her season resume. After nine events, she has now earned $935,202, which is more money than she amassed in any of her past three years on Tour.
With the win at the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill, Webb also overtook Ochoa for the ADT Official Money List title after Ochoa bogeyed 18 and fell into a tie with Han for second place. A solo runner-up finish for Ochoa would have kept her ahead of Webb on the ADT Official Money List.
"Karrie played really good golf, very consistent all four rounds," said Ochoa, who now has three runner-up finishes at the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill in four years and five runner-up finishes to go along with one win this year. "She deserved to win. That was a very big margin of victory and it was hard to catch her."
Webb, 66-68-66-70=270 (-14), never trailed all week, earning her eighth wire-to-wire win on Tour and her 32nd LPGA title. She had 21 birdies, seven bogeys and was the only player besides Joo Mi Kim (tied for 10th at 3-under-par 281) to play the par 3s, 4s and 5s all under par. She broke the tournament record by five shots, finishing at 14-under-par and her only threat on Sunday came from Mother Nature, who delayed play for 1 hour, 42 minutes with inclement weather. But even She gave up her pursuit to slow down Webb, who became the first multiple winner on Tour this year.

"My second start was awesome, thanks to my powerfull Molson Kawasaki! I’m of course happy to lead the Cup, I’ve been working so hard since two or three years to come at this level. The GP riders were really friendly with us, especially Tyla Rattray, Gareth Swanepoel and Josh Coppins.

Big funding boost for sport (May 9)
From the Australian Institute of Sport: Additional funding from the Australian Government in the 2006/07 budget will help Australia prepare for the growing challenge from countries pouring money into elite sport ahead of the Beijing and London Olympics, the Chairman of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Mr Peter Bartels, said today.
Mr Bartels welcomed the budget announcement of an additional $55.7 million over the next four years to further enhance Australia’s high performance athlete pathway.
The new package, to be implemented by the ASC, addresses four key areas:
1. High Performance Athlete Development: The government will provide $4.8 million over four years to establish a national talent identification network, regional and sport-specific talent identification initiatives and implement a talent transfer program.
An additional, $8.8 million will be spent over four years in a special talent identification scheme focusing on the unique potential and needs within the indigenous community. The sport of track and field will be a particular focus.
An additional $7.2 million will be invested over four years to promote regionally significant sports and other sports which have high potential to improve their results in international competition.
2. Coaching: An extra $4.6 million will be spent over the next four years to identify, train and retain elite coaches to oversee the development of Australia’s high performance athletes.
3. Sports science: In the face of growing international competition, an extra $8.7 million will be spent over four years on critical areas of need in sports sciences, including skills acquisition, data collection and analysis and performance analysis.
4. Sports excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport: $15.6 million will be invested in the scholarship programs of the world-leading AIS.
An additional $6 million will be spent on increasing the capacity of the AIS to deliver world class support services directly to athletes and coaches.
Also contained in the budget will be $10 million over four years to Australian University Sport to facilitate opportunities for regional university students to participate in sporting activities, which the ASC will administer.Mr Bartels said that in the financial year 2006/2007 the Australian Government had committed an unprecedented amount—$204.549 million—to the Australian Sports Commission.
Of this figure a total of $125.457 million was committed to high performance sport in 2006/07.
“It is clear that Australian sport is under the type of pressure from its international competitors that has not been seen for some decades,” Mr Bartels said.
“Countries around the world have seen Australia’s success and have adopted the model for the delivery of high performance coaching based on our national system of sports institutes, academies and intensive training centres.
“Increasingly, they are underpinning their sports systems with very sophisticated sports science, sports medicine and vocational support services to elite athletes.”
Mr Bartels said there was little doubt that Australia’s ranking on the Olympic table is under threat as evidenced by the improved performances of countries such as Great Britain, China, Japan and Korea.
“We have a small pool of athletes compared to countries like China and the United States and to meet the challenge from these and other countries, we have to continue to work harder and smarter,” Mr Bartels said.

Wie struggles in Korea (May 7)
Michelle WieMichelle Wie shot a 2-over 74 Sunday to finish out of title contention at the shortened SK Telecom Open, where she made the cut in a men's tournament for the first time.
The Hawaiian-born teenager had two birdies and four bogeys at the Sky 72 Golf Club course for a 54-hole, 3-under 213 — 12 strokes behind winner Prom Meesawat of Thailand (68).
"I did my best, but the result was not as satisfying as I would have liked," said the 16-year-old Wie said. "But the most important thing is that I tried my best."
Indian Jeev Milkha and Lee Seung-ho of South Korea shot final rounds of 70 to share second place at 12-under, one stroke ahead of defending champion K.J. Choi (65).
Heavy rain and strong winds forced the cancellation of the third round of the Asian Tour event, which was shortened from 72 holes. Wie was at the tee when the rain hit Saturday. After a delay of almost 3 hours, the course was declared unplayable.
Wie shot a 3-under 69 in the second round Friday to make the cut by five strokes and improve on her opening 70. She started the final round at 3 under, six strokes off the pace.
"I was really, really happy I've passed the first stage," Wie said. "Now I want to make the next step."
Wie heads to the US Open qualifying round in Hawaii later this month. She will attempt to make the cut in two PGA tournaments — the John Deere Classic in July, where last year she fell two strokes short of the cut, and September's 84 Lumber Classic.
The SK Telecom Open is Wie's eighth men's event. She has played in four PGA Tour events and has competed on the Japan, Nationwide and Canadian tours, missing the 36-hole cut in all seven tournaments. No woman has made the cut on the PGA Tour since Babe Zaharias at the 1945 Tucson Open.
Wie became the second woman to make the cut at a men's tournament in South Korea. LPGA star Se Ri Pak tied for 10th in the lower-tier KPGA Tour SBS Pro-Golf Championship in 2003.
Annika Sorenstam, the world's top female player, became the first woman in 58 years to compete on the PGA Tour when she missed the cut at the Colonial in 2003, shooting rounds of 71 and 74.
Wie opened her final round confidently Sunday, with birdies on the second and third holes, moving her to 7 under in early play despite high winds that sent her early shots wide of the fairways and greens.
Two bogeys later and she was back where she started.
On number 4, Wie added a penalty stroke when her tee shot fell short of the green and rolled back across a hazard line within feet of the water. She then watched her 8-foot putt lip out on Number 5 and swung her club in frustration after forcing herself into a two-putt finish on number 9.
The sweltering heat did little to help matters, and Wie went on to bogey the 11th and 15th.
Wie's parents were born in South Korea and her visit here has been treated like a homecoming by the local media and public, who formed galleries of thousands and clogged an expressway Friday to catch her play.
