Japan & China for Volleyball clash (11 Dec)
From the Asian Games: Japan ground down a resilient Thailand side to book their place in the women’s indoor volleyball final against China on 12 December.
Thailand put up tremendous resistance, with Pleumjit Thinkaow’s blocking to the fore, in a marathon opening set which took 30 minutes to complete.
Japan finally edged ahead and two spikes which landed just shy of the back line gave them the first set. From then on Shoichi Yanagimoto’s side took control and an increasing number of Thai service errors gave Japan a 32-30, 25-17, 25-17 victory.

Japan keeps football dream alive (10 Dec)
From the Asian Games: It was a night of two halves for neighbours Korea and DPR Korea on semifinals evening of the Doha 2006 women’s football tournament at Qatar Sports Club.
Japan kept their dream alive of winning the competition for the first time after a deserved 3-1 win over Korea. with all the goals coming in the second half for the Busan bronze medallists.

Campbell’s big day out (9 Dec)
A 14-year-old Brisbane schoolgirl has upstaged some of the biggest names in Australian swimming on the seventh day of heats at the 2006 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. The women’s 50 metres freestyle heats saw the schoolgirl, Cate Campbell, and 21-year-old Commonwealth Games breaststroker Sally Foster post faster times than Olympians Alice Mills, Libby Lenton, Michelle Engelsman and Jodie Henry – earning the two top qualifying spots for tonight’s semi-finals.

Sizzling form from Lenton & Jones (8 Dec)
The status quo returned to the Telstra Australian Championships with the Libby Lenton and Leisel Jones show back in full force at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane tonight. The Stephan Widmer trained divas have been a two-woman wrecking machine this year, cutting a swathe through the record books and winning gold medals almost at will. There were no records tonight but a pair of sizzling winning times that ensure the pair will head to next year’s FINA World Championships with confidence brimming. But the night wasn’t totally dominated by the women with Brenton Rickard, Eamon Sullivan and Ashley Callus also delighting the packed crowd.

Lenton & Henry clash looms (7 Dec)
Jodie Henry and Libby Lenton took a step closer to another mouth watering 100 metre freestyle battle on the fifth morning of the Telstra Australian Championships at Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane today.

Fiji causes netball champs concern (7 Dec)
From Netball Australia: On Wednesday December 6, Netball Australia was notified by the world governing body for netball, the International Netball Federation (“IFNA”), that they will be reviewing the current arrangements for the 2007 World Netball Championships, following the recent military takeover in Fiji.
The World Netball Championships is an IFNA event and any decision pertaining to the relocation of the championships will be made by IFNA.
Netball Australia will continue to closely monitor the situation through the ongoing advice from IFNA and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (“DFAT”).
IFNA has been regularly briefing Netball Australia and all other members on their position and we will not make further comment or speculate about the future of the 2007 World Netball Championships at this time.
IFNA has published a statement on their website, www.netball.org, and we encourage you to monitor this website for further information on the 2007 World Netball Championships.
Boomers vs Capital thriller (1 Dec)
How could you have written the script to Thursday night’s thrilling 61-58 win for the Nature Blend Bulleen Boomers over league leaders the Trans ACT Canberra Capitals in the mad basketball town of Geelong, 80km drive south west of Melbourne?
It was a full blown drama with no one clear from the referees, to the score bench to the coaches how many seconds were left on the clock in the dying moments as Canberra threatened to take the game into overtime. Once resolved Bulleen held possession and coach Cheryl Chambers gave a sigh of relief and a pat on her expanding stomach. “Not good for the baby” she whispered to a section of the crowd.
