News WNBL
season opening round-up (Oct 5) 30/9 Adelaide (93) Vs Townsville
(84)
The
Price Attack Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) tipped off on last Friday
night with the Adelaide Fellas playing host to the Townsville SEA FM Fire. In
front of the home crowed, the Fellas held off a strong late serge from Townsville
to take the match 93 - 84. Top scoring for the night was Adelaide Guard, Jenni
Screen with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists. Best for Townsville
was Rohanee Cox with, adding 24 to the Fires scorecard and taking nine boards. 30/9
Bulleen Melbourne (98) Vs Sydney Uni (90) In a nail biter, the Bullen Melbourne
Boomers were too good for the GET Sydney Uni Flames, defeating them 98 - 90 in
overtime at the Vento Club in Melbourne. A rematch of last years Preliminary
Final, the Boomers seize their chance take revenge on the Flames and in doing
so demonstrated to the Nation they are one team to keep an eye on this season!
Boomers centre, Katrina Hibbert top scored for the game with 27 points which
places here second only to Lauren Jackson on the league points scorers board. 1/10
Dandenong (72) Vs Sydney Uni (64) The Dandenong Jayco Rangers came out all
guns blazing when they opened their season 2005/06 account with a win, defeating
back to back premiers, GET Sydney Uni Flames 72 - 64. In a rematch to last
years grand final, you could do nothing but admire the depth and courage shown
by the Rangers who were missing last years captain Allie Douglas, regular stars
Jessica Bibby and Sam Richards, and new recruit Shelly Hammonds. Despite a
early lead by Sydney, the gutsy Dandenong team called on the best defensive player
in the WNBL, Emily McInerney, who was probably the difference in the end, living
up to her title by shutting down the Flames offensive cannon, Belinda Snell, who
was restricted to an uncharacteristic single two point basket for the match!1/10
Canberra (91) Vs AIS (47) Returning Home for the WNBL season, Lauren Jackson
live up to every bit of hype she's been getting after a stellar season with the
Seattle Storm in the WNBA. Tallying a lazy 39 points and nine rebounds, Jackson
spearheaded the Capitals to a 44 point annihilation of the AIS.
The
AIS stats page would be a grim sight for fans -- 17-year-old first gamer, Louella
Tomlinson with perhaps the only figures of note, managing 11 rebounds, and top
scoring for her team with 8. Undisputable standout of the night, Jackson,
has recently been nudged out of the 2005 Women's National Basketball Association
Most Valuable Player Award in the USA: poling 325 votes, she lost to American,
Sheryl Swoopes, who took the honour with just two more, on 327. 2/10 Perth
(57) Vs Townsville (100) Townsville will be satisfied one win from two games
on the road this weekend. After loosing to the rebuilt Adelaide powerhouse just
two days ago, Townsville showed they were a force to be reckoned with, dominating
the Perth Lynx in the West. Rohanee Cox was again best for the Fire nailing 22
points, assisting on 6 other occasions and pulling down 14 from the glass. Kelly
Wilson equal top scored for the Fire, whilst 3 other players notched up double
figures. In contrast the Lynx sole shining star was the 2005 import from the US,
Katharine Hanks proving her worth with 20 points - the only player to register
double figures this week for Perth. By Jesse Bilkey Dandenong
