How should the public service handle FOI? (posted 2008)
Lynnelle Briggs, Public Service Commissioner, on handling FOI: We gained an insight into how the media might report Cabinet papers if releasable under FOI with the recent petrol price-watch policy. The media reported that four key departments had recommended against the Government’s policy; the reported implication being that the Government had acted – foolishly – against the advice of the public service, and that there was disconnect between the new government and its public service advisors.
This reflects a misunderstanding about our system of government…

ABC shares 2020 vision (posted 2008)
ABC Managing Director Mark Scott recently released a paper on where the corporation sees itself heading over coming years.
“The ABC, with its 75 year history of providing reliable news and information, and quality Australian programming to Australian audiences, is uniquely placed to deliver more content on more platforms in the digital age,” Mr Scott said.
“As audiences fragment, and choices multiply, Australians will be looking towards the trusted ABC brand to continue to deliver reliable, quality Australian content.”
Part of the vision includes 6 TV stations and at least 15 radio outlets.

Avoid representing the scourges (posted 2008)
The Pope, on the Feast of St Francis de Sales: “The media must avoid becoming spokesmen for economic materialism and ethical relativism, true scourges of our time. Instead, they can and must contribute to making known the truth about humanity, and defending it against those who tend to deny or destroy it. One might even say that seeking and presenting the truth about humanity constitutes the highest vocation of social communication.”
(Note: de Sales is regarded as the patron saint of journalism)

Hamlet’s Blackberry: why paper is eternal (posted 2007, written 2006)
William Powers, a media critic at the National Journal in the USA some time ago contributed to the ongoing discussion over the future of paper publishing with this interesting piece.
It says, in part: “Though paper appears to be a relatively “dumb” medium, it…performs tasks that require special abilities. And many of paper’s tricks, the useful purposes it serves, are…products of its long relationship with people. There are cognitive, cultural and social dimensions to the human-paper dynamic that come into play every time any kind of paper, from a tiny Post-it note to a groaning Sunday newspaper, is used to convey, retrieve or store information. Paper does these jobs in a way that pleases us, which is why, for centuries, we have liked having it around.”
